Heritage
The population in Black Forest is approximately 13,000. Although much of Black Forest, Colorado appears undeveloped, it is not without historic significance. Archaeologists found evidence of arrowheads and charcoal pits used at least 800 years ago. The Ute and Comanche’s utilize the Ponderosa pine native to the area. The Kiowa followed until the Arapahoe and Cheyenne tribes laid claim.
Settlers arrived in the mid-1800s, bringing lumber and mine industries. Trading posts and eventually the railroad encouraged more settlement. Farming and ranching dominated. The Town of East in Bill sprouted up along the railroad. In the earlier parts of the 1900s, two country comes in summer home ventures gave Black Forest a new attitude. The entire area was owned for minimum five-acre lots in 1965. The rural character is also preserved through the Black Forest Preservation Plan of 1974.
