Colorado Springs Home to Military and Defense Industry
Many people are unaware of the many military and defense facilities that have made Colorado Springs home. As a matter of fact, these industries are responsible for the largest segment of the economy in Colorado Springs. Military installations range from the United Force Air Force Academy on the north side of the city to Shriever and Peterson Air Force bases on the east side, and Fort Carson and NORAD and Cheyenne Mountain Air Station on the south. The Space Foundation is also based in Colorado Springs.
Defense Industry
Colorado Springs is also home to complementary employers closely allied with defense. The development and operation of missile-defense, the aerospace industry and defense corporations have a presence in Colorado Springs. Big-name companies include Boeing, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman.
Our military installations have great responsibilities.
- The United States Air Force Academy trains officers in the Air Force.
- Shriever Air Force Base is responsible for the Global Positioning System, including navigational communications and spy satellites.
- Peterson Air Force Base is heavily involved in the development of missile-defense among numerous other responsibilities.
- The United States Northern Command, which is responsible for integrating all branches of the US military in North America, is headquartered at Peterson.
- Fort Carson is the largest military base. Fort Carson is home to the 4th Infantry Division, headquarters for two battalions of the 10th Special Forces Group, and operates several training facilities.
- The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) assists with the tracking of ICBMs. It operates out of the Cheyenne Mountain and Peterson Air Force Base facilities.
Military families
Military families stationed in Colorado Springs and those transferred to other bases often times fall in love with the Colorado Rocky Mountains. These families put in roots by purchasing Colorado Springs homes to enjoy the beautiful historic and cultural underpinnings in The Springs, the schools and educational institutions, and the wonderful, moderate four-season climate. Others returned to retire. Money Magazine selected Colorado Springs as the #1 Best Big City in 2006; Outside Magazine also honored the city on its list of America’s Best Cities in 2009.
