History
St. Francis Health Center (formerly St. Francis Hospital) was established in 1887 as a treatment clinic for injured railroad workers. Physician and surgeon for the Midland Railroad Company, Dr. B.P. Anderson founded the hospital when railroad services were being extended from Colorado Springs homes and transportation connections to Leadville, a mining community in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Four Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration traveled from Indiana to assist Dr. Anderson. They raised money and built the city’s first hospital at the site of today’s St. Francis Health Center. Its original purpose was for emergency and trauma care.
The facility now called Penrose Hospital opened in 1890 as a place to treat tuberculosis patients. Mrs. Albert Glockner, in consultation with Dr. Anderson, founded the Glockner Tuberculosis Sanatorium. She recruited Sisters of Charity from Ohio to assist. Meeting the needs of fast-growing Colorado Springs, it became a general acute care hospital. More special institutes and treatment centers were added over time.
The Penrose Family contributed greatly towards the building of new additions to the hospital. Spencer Penrose desired to open a cancer treatment center where people like himself who suffered from cancer could be treated locally. Glockner requested that the facility’s name was changed to honor of the contributions made over the years by Spencer’s wife, Julie Penrose. So we have Penrose Hospital.
Penrose Community Hospital was founded in the northeast part of Colorado Springs in the 1970s when the Sisters of Charity from Cincinnati purchased the former Colorado Springs Community Hospital, making it a part of the Penrose Health System. Then in 1987, the Sisters of St. Francis of Colorado Springs and the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati consolidated their healthcare facilities under the banner of Penrose-St. Francis Health Services. The Sisters later formed a nonprofit with Porter Adventist Health System, which is known as Centura Health.
St. Francis Medical Center opened in 2008. It is the only full-service hospital in northern Colorado Springs. Penrose-St. Francis Health Services also operates Penrose Mountain Urgent Care, Penrose Community Urgent Care, Penrose-St. Francis Health Learning Center, Colorado Sports and Spine Centers, and EAP Corporate Health Services.
