Historic Courthouse Home to Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum
The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum (CSPM) is a great destination whether you enjoy the cultural amenities from a Colorado Springs Colorado home or are planning to relocate, whether traveling through El Paso County or bringing students for a tour. A focal point of real estate in downtown Colorado Springs, the Museum highlights the unique history and culture of the Pikes Peak Region.
The Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum is located in the restored El Paso County Courthouse at 215 S. Tejon St. The original building was constructed in 1903. Stately architecture of the historic buillding offers a glimpse into turn-of-the-century craftsmanship.
The mission of the Museum is to collect, preserve, research, and interpret the history and culture of the region. This is also achieved through offering a series of permanent exhibits, programs and events, and changing exhibits on subjects such as Western art, Plains and Pueblo Indian cultures, antique quilting, and space exploration. There are beautiful murals by a local artist depicting the story of the Pikes Peak Region. The artist captures the time frame at the beginning of human occupancy through the building of the United States Air Force Academy.
Within the historic collections, the Museum cares for more than 60,000 objects. Collections range from a nationally significant collection of quilts to the possessions of author Helen Hunt Jackson, two items collected from the unit, Cheyenne, and Arapahoe cultures. Other collections highlight the mining history, agricultural history, health resort history and military training history. Surrounded by downtown parkland, the elegant building features outdoor sculptures in the grand fountain with beautiful flowers and green lawns during the warmer months.
The Starsmore Center
The Starsmore Center for Local History within the Museum presents interesting manuscripts from the early days. Newspapers and city directories, films, articles, books, and other collections are on display. The personal papers of Colorado Springs founder General William Jackson Palmer can be examined at the Center.
With the help of a large group of volunteers, the Museum also hosts ongoing events and special programs. There are celebrations of the Hispanic and Efferent can-American cultures in the area, lectures on the American cowboy, antique auto shows, classical music concerts, plays and summer jazz events.
