Peterson Air & Space Museum East of Downtown Colorado Springs
Residents and visitors to Colorado Springs real estate can explore the rich aviation and space history at the Peterson Air & Space Museum. It is 7 miles east of Downtown Colorado Springs, situated at the West Gate of Peterson Air Force Base. Many residents of Colorado Springs homes volunteer at the Museum or participate in the activities of the Peterson Air & Space Museum Foundation.
The aircraft fascinate the young and old who visit or are relocating to properties in Colorado Springs. The Museum’s Airpark collection is comprised of 16 aircraft and 10 missiles set on an 8.3-acre Colorado State Historic District. There are also several impressive exhibits. Exhibits tell the stories of the World War II Peterson Army Air Base, Bi-national North American Aerospace Defense Command between the United States and Canada, United States Air Force Space Command, and the United States Air Force and Army Air Defense Commands.
Volunteering
At the Peterson Air & Space Museum, there are many ways to volunteer. Experienced or not, the “Ramp Rats” maintain and restore the aircraft and missiles. The “Black Gang” works on everything from building exhibits to cleaning or operating the maintenance facility. The “Adopt-A-Plane” program provides care of the aircraft by keeping them washed and waxed. Others volunteer in the museum gift shop or as tour guides.
In addition, Friends of the Museum help by paying annual dues. Members receive discounts in the gift shop, the Foundation newsletter, a commemorative tile, and invitations to special museum events.
The Colorado Springs Edward J. Peterson Air and Space Museum Foundation, Inc. is a 501C (3) nonprofit, philanthropic organization. The organization is dedicated to using the Museum to inform and educate the public about the early history of Colorado Springs as well as Peterson Air Force Base.
