Howard Nippert of the USATF Mountain Ultra Trail Running Council spoke of the course in the Colorado Springs Business Journal on December 6 in an article by Monica Mendoza. Nippert described Pikes Peak as a “different style of course.” The combination of elevation, altitude, and terrain variations presents unique challenges. Runners began the Pikes Peak race on pavement. The course then changes to single-track comprised of dirt trails, rocks, and scree.
The USA Trail Marathon Championships are a part of the USATF Trail Series (sub-ultra). Runners will be scored on a series of races including the 10K Trail Championship in North Carolina, the US Mountain Championship in New Hampshire, and the Half Marathon Championship in Utah. Three results may be counted in the series total.
The Pikes Peak Marathon is well-known throughout the world. Mendoza reported that the 2012 winner called it one of the top three mountain races in the world.
