History of Seven Falls
As gold mining waned during the end of the 1800s, Colorado Springs captured the imagination of hoteliers. The property at Seven Falls was developed as a scenic resort. Naturalist James Hull purchased the prime Colorado Springs property in 1882 for $1300. He purchased other parcels in order to protect the environment from the lumber industry. Travelers reached the location in South Cheyenne Canyon only on horseback or burro or in horse-drawn carriages.
Seven Falls became a prominent tourist attraction after a local entrepreneur paid Hull and his sons to be able to take passengers to the waterfalls. In the mid-1900s, Albert Galatyn Hill bought the property and dramatically enhanced the stupendous views by installing lighting and building Eagle’s Nest, an observation platform on the south wall of the canyon.
The Grandest Mile of Scenery in Colorado
Approaching Seven Falls, the crystal clear water from the Pikes Peak watershed punctuates the spectacular steep-walled canyon of “The Grandest Mile of Scenery in Colorado.” To the left and the right, the Pillars of Hercules rise more than 900 feet above the canyon floor. The pink granite pillars outlined the waterfall which tumbles 181 feet down the picturesque gorge in seven separate leaps.
The waters divide into winding streams that flow through the prairie land east of the city. From the bottom of the waterfall, visitors conquer the 224 steps and hiking trails along the banks of the stream.
Others explore the Seven Falls exhibits, traditional American Indian dance performances in the summer, grab a bite at the café, or browse the gift shop. Seven Falls hosts special events, group tours and shuttle services. Annual Pass contributions help with the maintenance and preservation of the area.
